Both men and women aim to finish strong on day two
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 29, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams kicked off competition at the Raleigh Relays on Friday, featuring outdoor and collegiate-bests from a host of student-athletes on day one at the Paul Derr Track & Field Facility on the North Carolina State University campus.
"Overall we had an average day and I hope for improved performances tomorrow," said ETSU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. "We had several personal bests from the distance group and a couple from the sprint-hurdles group. Edgecombe did a nice job in reaching the finals of the hurdles."
Facing the strongest competition they have faced all year, the Buccaneers had a number of student-athletes fare pretty well. On the women’s side Demetria Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) turned in a fourth-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a collegiate-best time of 13.72. ETSU also had strong performances in field events, highlighted by a third-place finish with a leap of 5.54m from senior Kelly Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa).
On the men’s side, the Bucs fell just short of qualifying two competitors in the long jump with a fourth-place soar of 7.30m from Diego Lawrence (Waxhaw, N.C.) and a 10th place shortfall from Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) with an outdoor-best mark of 6.95m. In the 3000m steeplechase Sean Duffy (Jonesborough, Tenn.) managed to record a ninth-place finish with a score 9:36.23.
ETSU hopes to produce another strong day two performance that has been the norm in the recent weeks. The Bucs will close out action at the Raleigh Relays tomorrow with competition set to kickoff at 9:30 a.m. with the women’s 10,000m run. Follow along with live results here.
