WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Dec. 6, 2013) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track & field teams will begin the 2013-14 indoor season Saturday at the JDL College Kick-Off Classic in Winston-Salem, N.C. at the JDL Fast Track Indoor Track & Field Facility.

Competition will begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s 60 meter hurdle prelims and will continue throughout the day with the men’s 4x400 meter relays set to wrap things up at 5:35 p.m.

"We look forward to getting the track & field season started," said ETSU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. "This first meet is a test to find out how far along we are prior to the Christmas break."

Participating student-athletes for the Buccaneers include 15 men and 12 women who will compete in sprints, hurdles, throws and jumps.

"We will send a limited squad that will include several freshmen," said Watts. "I look forward to seeing how they respond to their first collegiate competition."

Highlighting the returnees for the men include senior Diego Lawrence (Waxhaw, N.C.) who registered a collegiate-best in the 60m with a 6.86 time to earn third place and an also collegiate-high of 21.82 in the 200m to earn fifth at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championship. Also featured for the men is fellow senior Briar Pierce (Crossville, Tenn.) who earned a collegiate-best time of 8.65 in the 60m hurdles to earn eighth place at the 2013 A-Sun Indoor Championship.

The women return a number of major contributors from last season including vital cogs on both the jumps squad and the sprints team. Senior Lexie Burley (Johnson City, Tenn.) returns after registering collegiate-highs in the 2013-14 indoor season in both the high jump (1.60m) and the long jump (5.62m) at the 2013 conference championship. Junior sprinter Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) enters the 2013-14 indoor campaign after posting collegiate-bests in the 60m (7.79) and 200m (25.26) at the 2013 indoor league championship.
