Roberts voted men’s most outstanding track and freshman performer; Vodova selected as women’s most outstanding field performer
MACON, Ga. (Feb. 28, 2014) – As voted on by Atlantic Sun Conference head coaches, freshman Simeon Roberts (Greeneville, Tenn.) and junior Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic) were selected as men’s most outstanding indoor track and freshman performer as well as women’s most outstanding field performer, respectively, the league office announced Friday.
Roberts earned his honors by taking first in the mile run at the 2014 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships with a time of 4:21.00. The Greeneville native also took the top spot at the Championships in the 3,000-meter run with a personal-best and Atlantic Sun Indoor Championship record 8:18.53 time. In addition at the conference meet, the freshman placed eighth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:04.22 and helped score a total of 21 points; the second-highest point total among male competitors at the meet.
Vodova received her accolade after posting victories in the high jump and long jump, while also placing fifth in the pole vault, at the 2014 Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships. The native Czech recorded personal bests in the long jump and high jump at the conference meet with top marks of 6.01 meters and 1.77 meters, respectively. The leap of 1.77 meters is also a new A-Sun Indoor Championship record. In total, Vodova scored 24 points which was third-most among female competitors at the meet.
In pursuit of qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, March 13 – 14, in Albuquerque, N.M., Vodova and senior Tyler Stepp (Dandridge, Tenn.) will compete Saturday at the Sewanee Indoor Track & Field Invitational in Sewanee, Tenn. Vodova will primarily compete in the long jump but may also participate in the high jump. Stepp, too, will contend in the long jump at the Invitational. These jump events will begin promptly on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Stay tuned to ETSUBucs.com on Saturday for a recap of Vodova and Stepp’s performances.
