ETSU’s lone competitors on Thursday showed well in decathlon events

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 20, 2014) – The ETSU track & field program was represented in decathlon events on Thursday by Nathan Rivera (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Evaristo Valls (Elche, Spain) who turned in productive performances on day one at the Charlotte 49er Classic.

The only Buccaneers competing on Thursday, Rivera and Valls started off ETSU’s stay at the Classic on the right foot. In the 100 meter dash event, Rivera finished eighth out of 17 with a time of 11.53, while Valls came in 12^th with an 11.70 time. In the long jump, Valls took seventh with a 6.43 mark, while Rivera followed in 10^th with a mark of 6.34; again out of 17 participants.

The duo again finished in the top-10, this time in the shot put where Rivera placed in the top-three at third with a toss of 11.08 meters and was followed by Valls rounding out the top-10 with a 9.91 meters mark. In the high jump, Rivera soared to a score of 1.87 meters to finish sixth, while Valls came in 13^th with a jump of 1.72 meters.

Closing out Thursday’s five decathlon events, Rivera raced to a seventh-place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.96, while Valls placed 15^th out of 17 competitors with a 55.39 time.     

Action will pick back up on Friday morning with the final five decathlon events and will progress toward men’s and women’s field events beginning at 11 a.m. which will continue on throughout the day. Running events will commence at 1 p.m. on Friday with 110 meter hurdle prelims and will run into the night before finishing with 5000 meter run final heats which are set to launch around 9 p.m.

Field events will start things off on Saturday and will progress into the afternoon. Running event finals will start with 4x100 meter relays at 11 a.m., and will continue over the course of the day with action at the Classic wrapping up with 4x400 meter relays at 4:30 p.m.
