Vodova tallies second-place mark of 5.90 meters in the women’s long jump

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 21, 2014) – The ETSU track & field program turned in a few impressive performances on Friday, including a second-place finish in the women’s long jump by Katerina Vodova (Humpolec, Czech Republic), at the Charlotte 49er Classic at Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.

In the women’s long jump, Vodova leapt to a mark of 5.90 meters to finish second in a field of competition featuring 42 participants.

Also for the women, Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) turned in a fifth-place finish with a collegiate-best time of 13.63 in the 100 meter hurdle prelims to advance to tomorrow’s final. The junior also placed 10th in the 100 meter dash prelims with a collegiate-high 12.05 time, narrowly missing qualifying for Saturday’s final by two tenths of a second.

“Edgecombe had another good meet just missing her school record in the hurdles,” said ETSU Director of Track & Field George Watts, “and had a very nice personal best in the 100.”

Building off of Thursday’s strong performance in the first five decathlon events, Nathan Rivera (Knoxville, Tenn.) kept the momentum going on Friday. The freshman tallied times of 17.97 in the 110 meter hurdles and 5:04.05 in the 1500 meter run, while posting marks of 27.08 meters in the discus throw, 3.65 meters in the pole vault and 38.55 in the javelin throw. These scores helped Rivera increase his point total to 5716, good for eighth out of 15 competitors. Evaristo Valls (Elche, Spain) did not finish the requisite decathlon events on Friday after completing all five on Thursday.

“Many of the kids are well ahead if where they were last year at this time, said Watts. That is very encouraging.”

Field events will start things off on Saturday and will progress into the afternoon. Running event finals will start with 4x100 meter relays at 11 a.m., and will continue over the course of the day with action at the Classic wrapping up with 4x400 meter relays at 4:30 p.m.
