Bucs look to build off of last week’s strong performances at ETSU Invitational
BLACKSBURG, Va. (Jan. 22, 2015) – Following kicking off the 2015 season last week as host of the ETSU Invitational, the ETSU track & field program is back in action this weekend in competition at the Hokie Invitational, Friday and Saturday, on the campus of Virginia Tech.
In their season-opening meet last weekend inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletics Center, the Bucs showed some encouraging signs for the 2015 campaign. In total, ETSU student-athletes captured four event titles in a crowded field of competition featuring 15 NCAA Division I schools and various unattached competitors, among others.
On Friday in the men’s 800 meter final, junior Thomas Miller (Lithonia, Ga.) posted a first-place finish with a time of 1:55.24. In the race, the runner competed against a cast of 26 and just edged Davidson’s Patrick Rollo who recorded a 1:55.26 time.
The following day, freshman distance runner Sarah Zimmer (Knoxville, Tenn.) took first place in the unseeded women’s 3000 meter run with a time of 10:56.09. This early, strong performance set the tone for the rest of the day as later; sophomore Brett Squibbs (Rock Hill, S.C.) cleared a 4.85 meters bar in the pole vault to take the event title. Senior hurdler Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) continued the Blue & Gold momentum with a victory in the women’s 60 meter hurdles event final with a time of 8.45.
Nearly 40 Buccaneer student-athletes will be competing at the Hokie Invitational which features 18 Division I schools from throughout the Southeast. The Blue & Gold will be participating in nearly 30 events including the 600 meter run, the pole vault, and the shot put – among many others – on both the men’s and women’s sides. Live results will be available throughout the weekend’s meet at FlashResults.com. Recaps of ETSU’s performances can be found at the end of each day by logging onto ETSUBucs.com.
