Senior hurdler captures event title in back-to-back weeks to start season

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Jan. 23, 2015) – The ETSU track & field program notched a pair of top-two event finishes on day one at the Hokie Invitational inside Rector Field House on the Virginia Tech campus.

Highlighted on the women’s side, senior hurdler Dede Edgecombe (Spartanburg, S.C.) continued her tear in the women’s 60 meter hurdles on Friday. After taking home the event title to start out the season last week at ETSU Track & Field Invitational, Edgecombe carried over the momentum to this week as she claimed the top qualifying position with a 8.43 time in the event preliminaries. Later, in the event final, the hurdler raced to a time of 8.48 to take the top spot among eight competitors.

For the men, junior Thomas Miller (Lithonia, Ga.) followed up last weekend’s event title in the men’s 800 meter run with another strong showing in a different event. In the men’s 600 meter finals, Miller recorded a runner-up 1:20.84 time among 20-plus event participants. The junior was slightly edged at the finish line by winner Prince Owusu-Mensah from Virginia Tech with a time of 1:20.60.

Also with a solid performance, junior sprinter Keturah Williams (Alpharetta, Ga.) followed up a fourth-place 7.62 time in the 60 meter dash preliminaries with a sixth-place finish in the event finals with a faster time of 7.61.

In addition, senior jumper Nicole Alexander (Rock Hill, S.C.) placed sixth out of 18 competitors in the women’s triple jump with a collegiate-best leap of 11.62 meters and senior vaulter Chris Winkle (Gray, Tenn.) tied for fifth in the men’s unseeded pole vault with a personal-best mark of 4.72 meters.
