ETSU hosts the SoCon Tournament Championships in February

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 29, 2016) – ETSU men’s and women’s track and field head coach George Watts announced Tuesday the 2016-17 indoor schedule, which includes hosting the Southern Conference Indoor Championships for the first time in 12 years.

“I am very excited about our indoor schedule.  We have two away meets that will give us a chance to go up against some quality competition,” said Watts. “Our three home meets are highlighted by us hosting the Southern Conference Championships at the end of February.”

Of the five scheduled events, three are being held inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center. To open the season, the Bucs will host the two-day ETSU Track and Field Invitational starting on January 13th. A week later, the Blue and Gold will travel to Blacksburg as the team will compete at the Hokie Invitational.

Following a trip to Virginia Tech, the Bucs will return home to hold the three-day Buccaneer Track and Field Invitational in early February. The meet starts February 2nd and runs through February 4th on David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field. To conclude their regular season, the Bucs will travel to the Music City Invitational in Nashville.

To start the postseason schedule, ETSU will host its first SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships in Johnson City since 2005. The meet begins February 23rd and runs for three days.

“We've been very fortunate to host a second meet in early February. This meet is in its third year, and we appreciate the support of the many schools that have attended,” Watts said. “Finally, there is always an advantage to hosting a conference championship, and this year is no exception.  We hope to have our alumni make it back for this meet and support the Bucs in our quest to battle for a team championship.”

Qualifying teams and student-athletes will then have the opportunity to compete in the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in mid-March in College Station, Texas.
