JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 25, 2017) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track and field programs started the SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships on a high note as both teams combined for seven wins in the preliminary rounds on Saturday inside the MSHA/ETSU Athletic Center.
Highlights of Day Two
- Kyra Atkins (Greer, S.C.) won the women’s 60m hurdles with a time of 8.40, and teammate Lamisha Simmons (Dania Beach, Fla.) placed fourth as the pair of Buccaneers qualified for the finals taking place tomorrow.
- Patrick Taylor (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Nathan Rivera (Knoxville, Tenn.) both competed in the men’s long jump. Taylor made the jump of the night as he made a leap of 7.41m, which is a personal best by 0.37m, and Rivera finished third with a jump of 7.00m.
- Michael Williams (Mt. Juliet, N.J.) won the men’s 60mH as he clocked in at 8.08, which is a personal record. The closest competitor behind him was at 8.14.
- Katrina Seymour (New Providence, Bahamas) outhustled the competition in the women’s 60m as she placed first with a 7.50 time to qualify for the finals. The 7.50 mark is a personal best for Seymour. Also earning a personal best, Kiana Davis (Ooltewah, Tenn.) placed third with a 7.61 time to qualify for the finals.
- Matt Moore (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) won the men’s 60m dash as he crossed the finish line at 6.75, which tied a personal best he set last season. Taylor finished third at 6.85 as the duo qualified for the finals on Sunday.
- The Bucs swept the prelims in the women’s 200m as the Bucs claimed the top-3 spots. Atkins took first place with a 24.38 time. Seymour crossed at 24.50, and Davis placed third with a time of 24.93. Atkins and Seymour both earned personal bests as all three Buccaneers earned a spot in the finals.
- Seymour won her second event of day one at the SoCon Indoor Championships. She won the prelims in the women’s 400m with 56.85, and the closest time was over a second behind her.
- After the first day, Rivera leads the men’s heptathlon with 2,882 points. Three events remain, as Rivera will compete in the 60mH, pole vault and 1000m tomorrow.
- Following a win in the men’s 60mH, Williams finished second in the men’s 400m at 49.18 and was just 0.06 seconds behind Henry Kiedy of WCU.
- Simeon Roberts (Greeneville, Tenn.) placed second in the men 3000m as he finished 8:17.08.
- Two Bucs placed second and third in the men 800m with Thomas Miller (Lithonia, Ga.) and Ashton Wilson (Gray, Tenn.). With the two finishing in the top-3, they both secured a spot in the finals.
- After winning the men’s long jump, Taylor placed second in the men 200m with a 21.85 time and was just 0.02 seconds behind Kiedy.
- In shot put, Jacob Dunlap (Fulks Run, Va.) placed fourth with a heave of 14.48m.
- Brett Squibbs (Rock Hill, S.C.) finished second with a vault of 5.10m. The senior was 0.05m from matching first place Tray Oates of Samford.
- Atkins placed second in the women’s long jump with a jump of 6.03. She was just 0.02m away from matching first place.
- As a team, ETSU currently sits in third place with 53 total points, and the women are in fifth with 18 points.
Day Two Information
Finals day of the SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championship begins at 8:30 a.m. with the completion of the men’s heptathlon.
The first non-heptathlon event starts at 10:30 a.m. with the women’s high jump, and the final event is the men’s 4x400m relay followed by the awards ceremony at 4:05 p.m.
