JOHNSON CITY, TENN. (March 23, 2017) – The ETSU Track and Field program will be split up this weekend between three meets as most of the team will travel to the Weems Baskin Invitational in Columbia, S.C. while a few others will compete at the Raleigh Relays and the Tennessee Rust Buster.
“We look forward to our second meet of the outdoor season this Friday and Saturday,” said director of Track & Field/Cross Country George Watts. “We will send a small contingent to the Raleigh Relays and the bulk of the team to South Carolina.”
“We had a very good first meet last weekend at the 49’er Classic that resulted in us sweeping the weekly SoCon awards. Matt Moore (track) and Brett Squibbs (field) won the athlete of the week’s honors for the men and Kyra Atkins swept the women’s awards. An extra bonus from last weekend was the school record performance by Katrina Seymour in the 400m hurdles.”
The 2017 Weems Baskin Invitational is hosted by the University of South Carolina at Shea & Morris Cregger Track, March 24-25. The first event will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 24 with the men’s javelin. The first track event begins at 12:00 p.m. with the women’s 1500m.
All events for the Raleigh Relays will take place at the Paul Derr Track and Field facility located on the campus of NC State. The two-day meet will begin on Friday March, 24 at 9:45 a.m. with the women’s 5000 meter run. The first field event will begin at 11:00 a.m. with the men’s discus throw.
It’s the fifth straight season in which the Buccaneers have competed at the Raleigh Relays. Last season at the meet the men’s 4x800-meter relay team took second out of 13 teams with a time of 7:38.69. On the first day of the meet, the blue and gold captured three top 40 finishes.
In a one-day meet on Saturday, March 25, a select few from ETSU will compete in the Tennessee Rust Buster in Knoxville, Tenn. The meet will be held at the newly refurbished Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium with the first event being the men’s hammer throw at 9:00 a.m. Track events will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the women’s 3000m steeplechase.
“This weekend the competition will be a little stronger and I look forward to seeing how we respond,” said Watts.
Last weekend, ETSU began the outdoor season at the Charlotte 49’er Classic where the Bucs had a total of five event winners. On day two of the 49’er Classic, junior Nathan Rivera (Knoxville, Tenn.) continued his momentum from the indoor season in the decathlon as Rivera took home the 49’er Classic decathlon title with a point total of 5,985.
On the final day of the 49’er Classic, ETSU had four event winners with sophomore Kyra Atkins (Greer, S.C.) claiming the 100m hurdle title along with senior Matt Moore (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) winning the 100m title with a time of 10.71.
