JOHNSON CITY, TENN. (April 20, 2017) – With less than a month to go before the Southern Conference Championships, the ETSU Track & Field program looks to build momentum as the Buccaneers head to Atlanta for the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend, April 21-22.
The meet begins on Friday, April 21 at 11:00 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw. The first track event begins at 6:00 p.m. with the women’s 100m hurdles. The meet is hosted by Georgia Tech and is held at George C. Griffin Track.
It’s the second straight year the Bucs have competed at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Last year, the blue and gold recorded five top five finishes including the men’s 4x100m relay team and senior Simeon Roberts (Greeneville, Tenn.) in the 1500m.
Last weekend in Cullowhee, N.C. at the Catamount Classic the Buccaneers shined on the final day with seven event victories as the men’s team finished second with a point total of 135 while the women finished third with 81 points.
Sophomore Kyra Atkins (Greer, S.C) personally had an outstanding day earning three event victories. Atkins earned her first victory as part of the 4x100m relay team along with winning the 100m and 200m dash.
On the men’s side, senior Brett Squibbs (Rock Hill, S.C.) at the Catamount Classic won his third pole vault event of the outdoor season, besting the competition with a mark of 4.90m (16’ .75”). ETSU also had six place in the top ten, four in the top five and the first two finishers in the men’s 1500m.
ETSU will compete in the Western Carolina Invitational, Friday April 28 before receiving a week off before the SoCon Championships in Birmingham, Ala., May 11-12. The NCAA East Preliminaries begin May 25 in Lexington, Ky. The top 48 times qualify for the NCAA East Prelims.
