Bucs challenge in limited Friday events in Nashville and Lynchburg

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 13, 2020) – The ETSU track and field team split up their squad this weekend to take on two meets, the Bucs finishing off a small portion of their scheduled events on Friday.

The distance runners headed to the Music City Challenge in Nashville, hosted by Vanderbilt. With a variety of top programs across the region there, the Bucs only had one event to compete in with the men’s 5000m.

Only three events were held in the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Va. in the opening day of action. ETSU competed in both the men’s and women’s weight throw before competing in the event-heavy Saturday.

Buxton missed a school record by .02m in the weight throw, a record she set last year in a toss of 18.49m.

Field Highlights from Day One of the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitation:

  • Kolin Miller finished the weight throw in 13th place, tossing a 15.51 throw in the opening event.
  • Buxton used momentum from last weekend where she took gold in the weight throw, following it up with an 18.47m mark on her third toss to place fourth. Coming into the event with the ninth best mark in the field, Buxton shattered her previous personal record this season by .46m to sit amongst the top of the leaderboard. Jataya Wilson, Jaden Finch, and Margaret Hayden all finished in the top half of the group with 17th, 18th and 20th placed finishes.

Track Highlights from Day One of the Music City Challenge

  • Ben Varghese led the Bucs in the only competition involving ETSU on Friday in Nashville, earning a fourth place finish in the 5000m race with a time of 14:28.45. Varghese finished just four tenths behind third place, while Seth Bowden finished 15th place with a 14:53.89 time.

Thoughts From Coach Watts

On the distance runners: "I'm pleased with the efforts put forth by Ben and Seth. Ben has come off of a bout with the flu recently so his effort is commendable. Seth had about a 17 second personal best and continues to make progress."

On the throwers: "Our throwers were up against some pretty stout competition at Liberty with the highlight being Symphony having a strong showing and flirting with breaking her school record."

On tomorrow's events: "We have a lot to look forward to tomorrow and I'm expecting continued improvement from everyone competing."
