ETSU opens final month of indoor regular season in Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Feb. 2, 2023) – Following a week off from competition, the ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams return to action this weekend as the Buccaneers gear up for the South Carolina Invitational.

Date: Feb. 3-4

Meet: South Carolina Invitational    

Location: Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex (Columbia, S.C.)

Time: Friday’s meet begins with the women’s weight throw, men’s shot put, men’s/women’s long jump and women’s pole vault at 10 a.m., while the track events get underway at 11 a.m. with the women’s 60m. On Saturday, men’s pole vault and men’s/women’s high jump get the field events started at 10 a.m., with the women’s 5000m being the first track event at 10:50 a.m.

ABOUT THE BUCS

  • ETSU has 22 men entered in this weekend’s meet, along with 31 women
  • Two weeks ago in Nashville, the women’s DMR team of Rebekah Howard (Ashland, Ky.), Hannah Burkhart (Knoxville, Tenn.), Julia Karsten (Old Hickory, Tenn.) and Genevieve Schwarz (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) set the school record with a time of 11:46.68 at the Vanderbilt Invitational.
  • That time of 11:46.68 is the 39th top DMR mark in the country.
  • Phelani Maduwa (Parys, Free State, South Africa) clocked a time of 1:51.27 in the 800m last time out in Nashville … That mark ranks 94th nationally and second among SoCon runners … Miguel Parrilla (Knoxville, Tenn.) has the fifth-fastest time among SoCon athletes in the event (1:53.32).
  • Brayden Hamblen (Rock Falls, Ill.) is coming off a personal best showing in the 5000m as he finished fourth at Vanderbilt with a time of 14:28.50 … That time is the fastest mark among SoCon runners this weekend … This weekend, Hamblen is scheduled to run in the 3000m.
  • In the field events, Malachi Thomas (Chilhowie, Va.) has the second top mark in the high jump as he posted a jump of 1.97m in the season opener at VMI, while Logan Wagner (Greeneville, Tenn.) has the third best distance in the shot put at 13.96m.
  • On the women’s side, Tya Blake (Lynchburg, Va.) has the fourth best mark in the triple jump at 11.49, set in the opener at VMI, while Diana Romero-Barba (Tepatitlan de Morelos, Jalisco, Mexico) has the sixth best height in the pole vault (3.45m).

UP NEXT

The Bucs will split up the squad next weekend, as a group of athletes will go to Nashville for the Music City Challenge and the other group will head to Lynchburg, Va. for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational.
