Track & Field begins outdoor season this weekend in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 15, 2023) – The ETSU men’s and women’s track and field teams begin the 2023 outdoor season when the Buccaneers travel to the Queen City to compete in the 49er Classic, which gets underway Thursday at the Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.

Dates: March 16-18

Meet: 49er Classic

Location: Irwin Belk Track & Field Center (Charlotte, N.C.)

Time: The meet gets underway Thursday morning at 11 a.m. with the heptathlon

Friday’s events start at 9 a.m. with the decathlon, while field events begin with the women’s hammer at 11 a.m. and running events start at Noon with the women’s 100m hurdles

Saturday’s events start with field competition at 10 a.m. (men’s shot put) and running events begin at Noon with the women’s 4x100m

Participating Teams: Division I programs competing this weekend include: ETSU, Charlotte, Davidson, Duquesne, Howard, Queens, UNC Asheville, UNCG, USC Upstate, Winthrop and Wofford

ABOUT THE BUCS

  • ETSU is scheduled to send 28 women and 22 men to the Queen City this weekend
  • Genevieve Schwarz (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), Kiera Snyder (Clyde, Mich.) and Mary Brown (Radford, Va.) look to defend their titles in Charlotte
  • Schwarz has won the 1500m the last two years at this meet, while she also added the 800m crown to her resume last spring … Schwarz ran 2:10.34 in the 800m a year ago and won the 1500m with a mark of 4:26
  • Snyder won the 3000m last year with a time of 10:09.32
  • In the field, Brown won her first collegiate gold in the hammer with a mark of 48.62m
  • The men’s and women’s 4x800m relay teams both won gold here last year … The women won with a time of 9:39.29 and the men clocked in at 7:56.72
  • Ethan Fulford (Knoxville, Tenn.) will be the first Buccaneer in action this weekend as he will compete in the decathlon, which gets underway on Thursday

ETSU heads back to North Carolina next weekend to compete in the Raleigh Relays, which will be held March 23-25.
