ETSU posts three podium finishes; Trio of Bucs set season best marks

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (May 13, 2023) – A select group of ETSU men’s and women’s track and field athletes completed competition at the Lee University Last Chance on Saturday at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

ETSU had a total of eight student-athletes in action with three Bucs earning podium finishes and three setting season best marks.

Genevieve Schwarz (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), Diana Romero-Barba (Tepatitlan de Morelos, Jalisco, Mexico) and Myles Stoots (Mobile, Ala.) all posted the podium finishes. Stoots, Miguel Parrilla (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Phelani Maduwa (Parys, Free State, South Africa) were the trio of Bucs to set season bests in their respective events on Saturday.

Schwarz earned a silver in the 1500m (4:24.20), while Romero-Barba and Stoots both had third-place finishes in their events. Romero-Barba finished third in the pole vault (3.63m) and Stoots set a season-best time in the steeplechase as he clocked in at 9:04.03.

Competing in the 800m, both Parrilla and Maduwa turned in their best performances of the season. Parrilla finished fourth with a time of 1:48.98 and Maduwa placed seventh in 1:49.24.

Mary Brown (Radford, Va.), Jessica Lord (Morristown, Tenn.) and Malachi Thomas (Chilhowie, Va.) were also in action on Saturday.

Brown, coming off a gold-medal performance in the discus at the Southern Conference Championship on. Tuesday, finished fourth in the discus (42.17m) and 10th in the hammer (43.29m) on Saturday.

Lord, also a gold-medalist on Tuesday at the conference championship in the 800m, finished fifth in the event on Saturday with a time of 2:09.26.

Thomas competed in the high jump but missed on all three attempts at the 1.93m height.
