Mens and Womens Tennis Teams Post Victories Against Wofford JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.-- The East Tennessee State University mens and womens tennis teams posted victories against the Wofford Terriers on Saturday afternoon.
The mens squad (3-4, 2-0 SoCon) won their 23rd straight Southern Conference regular season match by defeating the Terriers 7-0. ETSUs Gustavo Gomez defeated Brad Brendle 6-3, 6-1 at No.1 singles. At No. 2 singles, ETSUs Marcos Pavlovich took a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lee Porter. Buccaneer junior Roberto Fernandez captured a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brandon Smith. At No. 4 singles, ETSU sophomore Pablo Sahagun defeated Jason Mengel, 6-2, 6-0. ETSUs Juan Yannuzzi defeated Dial Burwell at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-4. In the final singles match, Buccaneer junior Antonio Bugge defeated Will Johnson, 6-2, 6-2.
ETSU claimed the doubles point after winning two of three doubles matches. ETSUs Gomez and Fernandez defeated Brendle and Porter, 8-2. Yannuzzi and Sahagun defeated Burwell and Johnson 8-5. Wofford won the final doubles match as Mengel and Smith defeated Pavlovich and David Poole, 9-8.
The ETSU womens team (4-1, 2-0 SoCon) defeated the Terriers 4-3. ETSU senior Paty Vega defeated Wendy Rohr 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Buccaneer junior Mami Inoue defeated Lauren Marie Whisenhunt 7-6, 6-3. ETSUs Jessica Irey defeated Anna Martin at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, ETSUs Cara Prupas defeated Candy Gore, 6-4, 6-4. Woffords Kristine Banks defeated ETSUs Tatiana Arrarian at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, Mary Wallace DeBerry defeated ETSUs Aimee Villavicencio, 6-3, 6-0.
The Terriers won two out of three doubles matches. ETSUs Vega and Inoue defeated Wisenhunt and Martin, 8-6. Woffords Rohr and Gore defeated ETSUs Prupas and Arrarian, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, Woffords Hantske and Banks defeated the ETSU team of Irey and Villavicencio, 8-6.
The ETSU men return to action Sunday, March 11 at 11 a.m. as they travel to Georgia State. The ETSU women take to the courts again on Monday, March 12 at 3 p.m. as they travel to Francis Marion University.
