DELAND, Fla. (June 7, 2007) - The ETSU athletic department was recognized for its memorable 2006-07 season as the Buccaneers received the Sherman Day Trophy, the Jesse C. Fletcher Trophy and the Bill Bibb Trophy at the Atlantic Sun conference meetings in DeLand, Fla. The Bucs enjoyed their best season in school history where they won eight conference championships.
The Sherman Day Trophy, awarded to the school that earns the most women's points throughout the school year, is headed to the state of
ETSU collected enough points in the men's all-sports race to be tabbed the recipients of the Jesse C. Fletcher Trophy, named in honor of Dr. Jesse C. Fletcher, a founding member of the Atlantic Sun and the conference's first president. The Buccaneers won six titles this season to jump to the top of the standings with 159 points. After a third-place finish in cross country to begin the year, ETSU collected first-place points in indoor track and field, basketball, tennis, golf, and outdoor track and field.
By sweeping the men's and women's all-sports race, ETSU also earned the first Bill Bibb trophy, given to the school who collects the most combined points throughout the year. The award for the combined all-sports trophy is named in honor of Bill Bibb, who was the commissioner of the A-Sun for the past 17 years. In January, Bibb became the league's Senior Advisor to the Commissioner.
On hand to receive the awards and representing ETSU were Dr. Paul E. Stanton Jr., Dave Mullins and Barbie Breedlove.
