ETSU celebrates both tennis championships as it host live selection show party Tuesday

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 27, 2009) - With both the ETSU men's and women's tennis teams earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament with victories in the Atlantic Sun Conference championships last week, the Buccaneers' athletic department will host a Selection Show gathering Tuesday night inside the Cave at the D.P. Culp University Student Center on the campus of ETSU.

 

Both championships teams will learn its seeding and first round opponents live inside the "Cave," which is located on the first lower level of the University Center, at 5 p.m., on ESPNNews.

 

The No. 57-ranked Bucs rolled to their third straight A-Sun title with a hard fought 4-2 win over league foe Stetson. On its way to its third consecutive title senior Enrique Olivares (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela) picked up both his third A-Sun Tournament MVP award, in addition to taking his second straight A-Sun Player of the Year honor. Overall, ETSU placed a record six players on the all-conference team, while head coach Yaser Zaatini picked up his second straight A-Sun Coach of the Year honor.

 

Over on the women's side the Lady Bucs returned to championship form with a thrilling 4-2, comeback win over Stetson in the A-Sun title match. Individually, senior Tara Byrne (Johnson City), who became ETSU all-time wins leader this spring, was named tournament MVP, while teammates Yevgeniya Stupak (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Tara Sheets (Gate City, Va.) joined the senior captain on the all-tourney squad. Overall, the Lady Bucs enter their second NCAA Tournament in school history after winning its last eight matches.
