Bucs also sit atop the men's all-sports competition

MACON, Ga. (April 23, 2009) - After a pair of first-place finishes in both the Atlantic Sun Conference men's and women's tennis championships last Saturday, ETSU has took the lead in the hunt for the 2008-2009 Bill Bibb Trophy, the combined all-sports trophy for the A-Sun.

Currently ETSU sits with a 289.5 total after leading the league with four conference titles in men's cross country, men's track and field and both the Buc and Lady Buc tennis teams. Former leader Belmont sits in second behind ETSU with 261 points, while Jacksonville comes in third falling six points back of the Bruins.

Campbell jumped into fourth after recently capturing the title in men's golf and strong finishes in men's and women's tennis. The Camels are 17 points behind the Dolphins. Kennesaw State rides the coat tails of the Camels, sitting 12 points behind them, while UNF and FGCU take the sixth and seventh spots. The list rounds out with Stetson, Mercer, USC Upstate and Lipscomb sliding in at eighth through 11th.

In women's athletics Jacksonville maintains its lead in the race for the Sherman Day Trophy. The Dolphin women own a 15-point advantage in the standings for the ladies all-sports competition. Kennesaw State moves into second with Belmont and ETSU tied for third, 16.5 points behind the Dolphins. FGCU controls fifth with 126 points, followed by Campbell, UNF and Mercer. Even after a pair of first place finishes in golf and tennis, Stetson trails the Bears in ninth, while USC Upstate and Lipscomb finish the list in 10th and 11th.

Over on the guy's side the Bucs own a slight lead in the men's all-sports competition for the Jesse C. Fletcher Trophy. ETSU has a 10.5-point margin over second-place Campbell. With the men's tennis title in hand ETSU stays ahead of the Camels, while Belmont falls to third and UNF jumps two spots to fourth. Jacksonville moves to fifth, while Stetson and USC Upstate move up to sixth and seventh. Rounding out the standings for the men's competition are Lipscomb, Mercer, Kennesaw State and FGCU who fall into spots eight through 11.

Overall, ETSU has dominated the all-sports race since the A-Sun established the Bill Bibb Trophy during the 2006-07 season. The Bucs have won back-to-back combined all-sports titles the last two athletic years, in addition to tying the A-Sun record (UCF-2002) of 160.5 points by Buccaneer men's teams a season ago.

Below is a look at the standing and a description of how the point system breaks down.

The conference awards points for the all-sports race on a descending basis in three-point increments according to a particular team's finish in relation to the number of teams competing in that sport. In team sports, an institution's position in the final regular season standings denotes their total points for a particular sport. In individual sports, (cross country, golf, track & field) the final A-Sun Championship Standings determine a school's point total. Any teams who tie split their allotted points.
