JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 22, 2008) - The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Johnson City Athletic Club have reached an agreement to give youngsters participating in the sports of boxing and martial arts a place to train during the winter months.

In a cooperative effort between Buccaneer athletics, the JCAC, and the Johnson City Housing Authority, ETSU's Memorial Center will be made available for training throughout the winter months, and Brooks Gym will be used for future amateur boxing events.

"This is a partnership we are glad to endorse," said ETSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dave Mullins. "We're happy that from a scheduling standpoint things have worked out to allow this to happen. We think this can be a positive for the JCAC and we're glad to help give these young athletes a place to train during the winter."

Ed Zimbicki, Executive Director of the Johnson City Housing Authority and founder of the JCAC, voiced his appreciation to ETSU for allowing access to these facilities, and explained just how important the JCAC has been in helping young athletes develop both their skills in the ring and in life.

"Not every kid is interested in football, baseball, soccer or basketball," Zimbicki said. "JCAC provides an outlet for boys and girls particularly interested in the sport of amateur boxing. There have been many success stories chronicled since the joint venture was established in 2000. Currently, we have two boxers, Charlie and Blayton Watson (brothers) who both are ranked No. 3 in the United States in their respective weight classes. That's really amazing when you look at where the program started and where we are today. Both those young men could end up on the Olympic team representing Johnson City someday."

Since its inception in 2000, the Johnson City Athletic Club has presented opportunities for the youth of Johnson City interested in boxing and martial arts. JCAC is headquartered at 403 Harrison Street across from Kiwanis Park.

In eight years, the Club has seen over 300 members pass through its doors. Presently,

there are nearly 50 active club members all of which have signed a personal responsibility

agreement that blends citizenship with making good grades as a prerequisite to membership in the "Club."

            JCAC is a joint venture between the City of Johnson City and the Johnson City Housing Authority.
