JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 24, 2008) - The ETSU athletic department teamed up with the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Department last Friday to host the Discover Olympics for local summer camp kids.

"This event was a wonderful chance to give back to the community of Johnson City," said marketing and promotions coordinator Sara Hacker. "Johnson City Parks and Recreation has always been very helpful to ETSU Athletics so it was very important to us to combine efforts with them and lend a helping hand.  As a representative of ETSU Athletics, I would have to say the most joy of giving back to community that day was to see the smiles on those children faces, knowing that ETSU Athletics helped make a difference."

Competitors ranged in age from 6 to 14 years old, and had been a part of the Carver Discovery Camp, the Kiwanis Discovery Camp and the Fit-to-Play Camp. Over 100 Johnson City kids participated in the event. ETSU volunteers included A.D. Dave Mullins, Barbie Breedlove, Barb Mason, Kevin Bostian, Phillip Al-Mateen, Bob Baker, Candy Stieler, JoAnne Paty, Karen Kemp, Jeff Schneider, Lindsay Christianson, Michelle Mislen and Hannah Johnson.

Events included the 100 meter dash, long jump, team basketball, frisbee/softball toss, water relays and dodge ball with the top three finishers in each age group being recognized. For more information about ETSU athletics visit www.etsubucs.com.
