JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July, 23, 2008) - The 2007-08 season was a memorable one for ETSU student-athletes both in and out of the classroom.
The Buccaneers were noticed for their presence on the athletic side as ETSU had four of its teams compete in the NCAAs this past season; however, the Bucs also made noise in the classroom by catapulting their way into the top tier of the Atlantic Sun Academic standings.
ETSU made one of the biggest leaps in the conference from a year ago by moving into third place in the overall standings. In total, 121 of the 187 Buccaneer student-athletes received All-Academic honors - resulting in 64.7 percent making the conference's academic list. In addition, ETSU claimed the top spot among the spring sports (1st out of 12 teams) by placing 71.4 percent of its student-athletes on the all-academic list, which were six slots higher from where the Bucs finished in 2006-07.
"This level of improvement in the All-Academic rankings of our student-athletes is very rewarding and justifies what I've felt all along, that our athletes are exceptional in and out of the classroom and that our coaches do an outstanding job in recruiting," said ETSU's Director of Academic Services Bob Baker. "The long hours and hard work that the academic services staff commits are worthwhile when we see our student-athletes achieve academic rankings like these".
Additionally, in the spring, ETSU had 15 student-athletes in the Buc 4.0 Club, seven teams with a 3.0 GPA or higher, 76 percent of all student-athletes were named to the Buccaneer Honor Roll (3.0 GPA or above), 33 student-athletes were named to the Dean's List and every ETSU athletic team earned team GPA of 2.8 / B- average or higher.
Below is a breakdown of the seven teams above a 3.0 GPA and the 15 student-athletes who made a 4.0.
