COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee Tech didn't get too many hits Thursday afternoon against East Tennessee, but the Golden Eagles made every one count in claiming a pair of non-conference wins over the first-year Buccaneer program, winning 3-1 and 6-1.

Now idle until next Tuesday, the Golden Eagles improved to 32-16 overall while ETSU fell to 8-26. Among Tech's 13 hits were a pair of three-run home runs by Jennifer Smith and Whitney Williams.

Tech scored all three of its runs in the third inning, including a two-run home run by senior catcher Jennifer Smith, and lefty Adrienne Fortmann (19-8) made it stand up with her fifth consecutive victory. Fortmann scattered seven hits, struck out two and didn't walk a batter, finally allowing a run in the top of the sixth.

The Bucs run came after Tiffany Vandergriff reached on a fielder's choice and Jessica Hodge was hit by a pitch. Melonie Collins doubled to drive home Vandergriff, but shortstop Marianne Novac's relay home allowed Smith put tag out Hodge. Vandergriff (7-13) allowed just six hits in the game, walked two and struck out two in getting tagged with the loss.

Tech's third inning opened with a single by Stephanie Dallmann and a sacrifice bunt by Novac. With two out, Lee Ann Mongar singled to score Dallmann, and Smith jacked her seventh home run of the season to make it 3-0. It tied the Tech single-season record for most home runs, set by Melanie Marshall in 1986.

Tech put five runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning of the second game after ETSU had claimed a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning. A walk to Julia Chance, a sacrifice bunt and a double by Reah Holler gave the Bucs their only lead of the afternoon.

The Golden Eagles answered quickly. Leanne Holley drew a one-out walk and Dallmann singled. Novac followed with a bunt single, and the throw to first was wild, allowing pinch-runner Jessie Sain to score the tying run. Whitney Willliams launched her fourth home run of the season to make it 4-1, and Mongar's double to the left field fence chased starter Marsha Giles (0-4). Mongar eventually scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Tech added one last run in the sixth when Amy Goad singled, Holley reached on an error and Dallmann walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Williams to hit a sacrifice fly to plate Holley.

Mongar (5-4), pitching for the first time in nearly three weeks, earned her first win since March 3. She went the distance, allowing four hits in seven innings, walking two and fanning three.

Mongar finished the afternoon with four hits, while Smith, Dallmann and Goad each added two hits. Fortmann went hitless, ending her hitting streak at 10 games. For ETSU, Miranda Byerly led the way with three hits including two doubles, while Collins and April Arnold had two hits apiece
