Softball Falls in Doubleheader to Morehead State

Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Morehead State, 2-1 and 7-3, Saturday afternoon from Morehead, Ky.

In the first game, the Buccaneers (1-11) scored a run in the top of the seventh, but left the tying run stranded on second in the 2-1 loss. Tiffany Vandergriff pitched well, allowing just one earned run and six hits while striking out three in six innings pitched. The lone Morehead State runs came on a Nikki Brock two-run homer in the bottom of the second. The Eagles managed just three hits in the rest of the game, but the Buccaneers could not make up the deficit.

The lone Buccaneer run came on an RBI groundout in the sixth by second baseman Andrea Roberts. Third baseman Judith St. Clair went 2-3 with a stolen base and a run scored for ETSU.

In the second game, Morehead State jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, and never looked back in defeating the Buccaneers 7-3.

Morehead State sent eight batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on two hits and an error.

The Buccaneers (1-12) were the next to score, as they tallied two runs on one hit and one error in the top of the fourth. The Eagles responded, putting the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to take a 7-2 lead. The big hit of the inning was a two-run homer to center by first baseman Nola Queen.

ETSU would mount one final rally in the bottom of the sixth, but could only come up with one run, stranding runners on second and third.

The Buccaneers were led by shortstop Melonie Collins who went 2-2 with a double, triple, two runs scored and a walk.

The Buccaneers return to action on Monday, March 12 at 2 p.m. as they play their first home games in program history in a doubleheader against Lambuth University at Kiwanis Park.
