Chattanooga, Tenn. (May 5, 2002) -- The Chattanooga Lady Mocs scored four unanswered runs to begin the game and went on to defeat East Tennessee State, 7-1, in game seven of the Southern Conference Softball Championships Sunday morning from Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. Chattanooga (40-13) scored a run in the top of the first to take the lead without the benefit of a hit. Leftfieder Grace Pickett led off the inning with a walk. She advanced to third on an error and came home on a bases loaded walk by centerfielder Paige Cochrane. The Lady Mocs extended their lead to 4-0 by plating three more runs in the bottom of the third. First baseman Jada Pescatore reached on an error to lead the inning off and advanced to second as shortstop Jill Crawford reached on a bunt single. Cochrane then doubled to drive in Pescatore, but Crawford was tagged out in a rundown between third and home. Designated player Tera Garner next came to the plate and belted a home run to left center. The Bucs (24-31) got on the board by scoring a run in the bottom of the third. Freshman centerfielder Danielle Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.) walked with one out and advanced to third on a walk by senior designated player Melanie Collins (Greeneville, Tenn.). Spetar came home when sophomore first baseman Miranda Byerly (Candler, N.C.). Chattanooga scored another run in the top of the fourth as Pickett singled to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by second baseman Dana Reed. She went to third on a single by third baseman Melissa Ramirez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pescatore. The Lady Mocs scored single runs in the sixth and the seventh to close out the scoring. Spetar and Collins both had two hits in the game for ETSU. Crawford and Cochrane each collected two hits for the Lady Mocs. Cochrane drove in three runs while Garner drove in two. Senior pitcher Marsha Giles (Jonesborough, Tenn.) took the loss (5-11) after allowing four runs (two earned), and three hits in 2.1 innings of work. Southern Conference Pitcher-of-the-Year Beth Alexander got the win (23-6) for Chattanooga, pitching a complete game while allowing one run on five hits. The Bucs will next play UNC Greensboro at 12:30 p.m. in game nine of the double-elimination tournament.
