Boone, N.C. (April 28, 2002) Appalachian State scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and the Bucs could not recover as the Mountaineers downed ETSU, 6-0, in the final game of the regular season Sunday afternoon from the Watauga County Complex in Boone, N.C. Appalachian State (11-43, 4-15 SoCon) scored six runs on six hits in the first inning to put ETSU in an early hole. Candace Shelton singled to lead off the game then beat the throw to second on a fielder's choice. She would later score on a single by Amber Joyner. After another run came home on a passed ball, Kelly Doss singled to drive in another run. Laura Ammarell continued the Mountaineer assault as she connected on a double to left field to drive in the fourth run of the inning. Sarah Gough topped off the inning with a two-run triple, her second of the year. That would end the scoring as ETSU (23-30, 9-12 SoCon) starter Tiffany Vandergriff (Sale Creek, Tenn.) (7-9) did not allow another hit. Vandergriff gave up six hits and five earned runs in the loss while walking one batter and striking out two. Appalachian State starter Jordan Arnold (6-18) pitched her second shutout of the season, allowing three hits while walking one and striking out two. The Bucs got hits from sophomore first baseman Miranda Byerly (Candler, N.C.), sophomore catcher Sheryl Clark (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior second baseman April Arnold (Mountain City, Tenn.).
