Boiling Springs, N.C. (Apr. 11, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State Buccaneer softball team lost two games by the slimmest of margins, falling 2-1 and 4-3 in a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb Thursday afternoon from Boiling Springs, N.C.
Gardner-Webb (23-25) freshman Rachael Riopel singled to score senior Joni Carter and earn the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. ETSU (16-24) answered back in the top of the fourth when freshman outfielder Amy Moore (Jacksonville, Fla.) doubled to score sophomore catcher Sheryl Clark (Bradenton, Fla.). In the bottom of the sixth, Riopel came to the plate again and ripped a triple and scored on a throwing error to bring the final 2-1 win.
Sophomore first baseman Miranda Byerly (Candler, N.C.) led the Bucs with two hits in three at bats. ETSU starter, sophomore Tiffany vandergriff (Sale Creek, Tenn.) went the distance, allowing six hits, one earned run and striking out three.
In game two, ETSU went out in front first picking up three runs in the top of the third. But, with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs managed to pull ahead 4-3, the final margin of
victory.
Sophomore outfielder Rhea Holler (Peoria, Ariz.) led the team in game twp, going 2-3. Buccaneer starter, freshman Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) tossed a complete game, allowing six hits, one earned run and striking out three.
The Bucs return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. for a Southern Conference softball doubleheader against Furman from Metro-Kiwanis Park.
