Softball Falls To Georgia Southern in Pitcher's Duel, 1-0

Statesboro, Ga. (Apr. 7, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State softball team fell to the Gerogia Southern Eagles, 1-0, Saturday afternon from Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga. With the game scoreless, East Tennessee State (14-22, 4-8 SoCon) had its best chance to score in the top of the sixth. Sophomore first baseman Miranda Byerly drew a leadoff walk and freshman pinch-runner Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) moved to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore leftfielder Tiffany Vandergriff laced a single to short center field, but Eagle center fielder Julie Peel hit catcher Suzanne Pansulla on the fly to retire Lane at the plate. With one out for Georgia Southern (18-23, 10-2 SoCon) in a scoreless game in the bottom of the seventh, Crystal Crews hit a 1-2 pitch the opposite way to right field for the game-winning home run. Freshman outfielder Danielle Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.) paced the Buccaneers with two hits , raising her series average to .444. ETSU freshman pitcher Courtney Jenkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) went the distance, allowing six hits and the one run, while striking out one. The Buccaneers return to action when they face North Carolina A&T in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from Metro-Kiwanis Park in Johnson City.
