Johnson City, Tenn. (Mar. 9, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State softball team continued their solid play, defeating the Morehead State Eagles, 7-5, in their third game on Friday in the Western Kentucky University/Ramada Inn Spring Fling from Bowling Greek, Ky.
MSU took an early 1-0 lead after Jill Sloan walked to begin the contest, stole both second and third, then crossed the plate on a passed ball.
ETSU tied the game in the second on a two-out single by freshman centerfielder Danielle Spetar (Knoxville, Tenn.) that scored Holler, then broke it open with a four-run third. Sophomore catcher Sheryl Clark (Bradenton, Fla.) scored on an error by right-fielder Toni Orr and sophomore first baseman Miranda Byerly (Candler, N.C.) then singled past the pitcher with two outs to drive in two runs. Senior second baseman April Arnold (Mountain City, Tenn.) added a run-scoring single one batter later to give the Bucs a 5-1 advantage.
Morehead State's Sara Hacker homered to lead off the fifth and cut the Eagles' deficit to three runs, but ETSU senior shortstop Melanie Collins (Greeneville, Tenn.) doubled to start the bottom half of the frame and came around to score on Byerly's triple into the right-field corner. Morehead added two runs in the sixth when both Hernandez and Orr scored on an error to make it a one-run contest, but the Buccaneers again answered with a homer in the bottom half of the inning from Spetar.
Senior pitcher Marsha Giles (Jonesborough, Tenn.) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks to pick up the win, improving to 3-3. Jenkins earned her second save by closing out the final 2.0 innings.
ETSU's first game on Saturday is against host Western Kentucky at noon.
