Johnson City, Tenn. (Mar. 5, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State softball team defeated the Tennessee Wesleyan Lady Bulldogs, 9-1 and 6-2, in their first home games of the season Tuesday afternoon from Metro-Kiwanis Park in Johnson City, Tenn. The Bucs (5-7) got on the board in the bottom of the second as sophomore pitcher Tiffany Vandergriff (Sale Creek, Tenn.) lined a double to left center, driving home three runs. Tennessee Wesleyan (1-5) answered in the top of the third, scoring a run of their own as shortstop Shasta Gatlin came home on an error. ETSU loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and Vandergriff cleared them with a grand slam home run, blowing the game open, 7-1 after the fourth inning. Freshman right fielder Amy Moore (Jacksonville, Fla.) ended the game with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth, making the final score 9-1. Vandergriff finished the game 2-3 with a double, a home run, seven RBI and a stolen base. She also picked up the win on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and striking out three Lady Bulldogs. Moore continued her hot play of late, going 3-3 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in two. East Tennessee State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The key blows of the inning were a home run by Moore and a two-run single by sophomore outfielder Rhea Holler (Peoria, Ariz.). Moore's bat did not cool down for her next at-bat, as she belted another homer to left-center on the first pitch of the third inning to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Bucs. ETSU put another run on the board as sophomore infielder Julia Chance (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored on an error. Tennessee Wesleyan fought back, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 5-2. first baseman Nikki Shockley singled home center fielder Amanda Potuk, who led off the inning with a walk. Shockley would later score on a passed ball. The Bucs closed the scoring with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Holler singled to lead off the inning and was driven home by Chance, who followed with a triple. Senior pitcher Marsha Giles (Jonesborough, Tenn.) pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run and four hits while striking out two. Moore went 2-3 at the plate with two home runs. For the doubleheader, Moore and Vandergriff dominated at the plate. Vandergriff went 3-7 with seven RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored. Moore was 5-6, with two home runs, four runs scored and four RBI. East Tennessee State returns to action this weekend from the Western Kentucky Invitational in Bowling Green, Ky.
