Johnson City, Tenn. (Feb. 24, 2002) -- The East Tennessee State Buccaneer softball team defeated Appalachian State, 4-3, and then fell to Georgia, 11-0, in the final two games in the University of Georgia Bulldog Invitational, Sunday afternoon from Athens, Ga. In game one, the Bucs (3-7) were victorious over Southern Conference rival Appalachian State for the second straight day, but this time by a much smaller margin. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when the Bucs would put two runs on the board. Sophomore catcher Sheryl Clark (Bradenton, Fla.) led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by sophomore first baseman Miranda Byerly (Candler, N.C.). Freshman third baseman Lindsay Lane (Erwin, Tenn.) then doubled, scoring both Clark and Byerly. Appalachian State answered right back, scoring two runs of their own in the top of the fifth. The Mountaineers went ahead, 3-2, after scoring another run in the top of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Amy Moore (Jacksonville, Fla.) led off the seventh with a double and advanced to third on a single by sophomore Tiffany Vandergriff (Sale Creek, Tenn.). Freshman shortstop Mary Beth Hazelwood (Knoxville, Tenn.) then came to the plate and doubled, scoring bith Moore and Vandergriff and giving the Bucs a dramatic 4-3 victory in their last at bat. Vandergriff picked up the win on the mound for ETSU, pitching three innings and allowing five hits. She also had a great game at the plate, going 3-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Lane and Hazelwood had two RBI each for the Bucs. In game two, ETSU ran into a hot Georgia Bulldog (21-0) ballclub and fell 11-0 in the finale of the tournament. The Bulldogs wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Georgia added two runs in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth to end the game. ETSU could muster just two hits in the game, a single by Vandergriff to lead off the game and a single by Hazelwood in the top of the fourth. The Bucs return to action on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in a doubleheader at Elon.
