CHATTANOOGA, TN -- Eighth-seeded Appalachian State
continued its inspired tournament run with a 4-0 shutout
of sixth-seeded East Tennessee State Saturday, advancing
to face number four Elon at 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the 2004
SoCon Softball Championships.
ASU starting pitcher Jordan Arnold was nearly unhittable
on the day, allowing just two singles while striking out
three batters. With the win, she improved to 10-12 on the
year.
ASU manufactured its first run in the bottom of the second
inning. After a Kristyn Hurt single, pinch runner Letitia
Lennon stole second base and advanced to third on a
fielder’s choice. Christa Hicks then drove Hurt
home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Candace Shelton scored ASU’s second run in the third
inning thanks to consecutive throwing errors by ETSU
infielders.
The Mountaineers’ Amber Handy continued her stellar
play in the tournament with a two-RBI single in the fourth
inning, plating Shelton and Wendy Lewis.
Handy was the story again offensively, tallying two hits
and two RBI for the victorious Mountaineers.
Tiffany McVay (Soddy-Daisy, Tenn.) was credited with the loss despite allowing
only one earned run on the day.
With the loss, East Tennessee State (29-34, 8-13) is
eliminated from the tournament.
