ETSU softball sweeps Virginia Intermont

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 5, 2007) -The ETSU softball team won both games of the Virginia Intermont double header on Friday at Metro Kiwanis Park. Senior Amanda Haverman (Kirkwood, Mo.), blasted the Cobras with three home runs in game two. Haverman combined with Darci Gilbert to pitch a two hit shut out against Virginia Intermont in game one winning 6-0.

 

The Bucs jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Haverman went 2-2 with a walkand scored three runs, while freshman Katie Henderson (Jackson, Tenn.) was 2-2 with two RBI and scored a run. Katie Jett (Talbot, Tenn.), also had two hits and scored a run for the Bucs.

 

In game two the Bucs run ruled Virginia Intermont 9-1. The Bucs had 13 hits in the game as Haverman went 3-3 with three home runs and six RBI.

 

The Bucs again jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Haverman sent a ball way over the left field fence for a two-run homerun. In the third inning Haverman stuck again this time with a three-run homerun, and in the fifth inning she led off with a solo shot that was a no doubter as it left the bat.

 

Trisha Massenzo (Russellville, Tenn.), and Jessica Hackworth (Clinton, Tenn.), both went 2-3 with 2 runs scored, while Gilbert went 2-3 with 2 RBI. Henderson also was 2-3 and scored a run. Ashley Boyd (Chattanooga, Tenn.), had five strikeouts in two innings pitched as she struck out the side in the top of the fifth.

 

On the day Haverman was a perfect 5-5 with six RBI and scored six runs. Henderson was 4-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.

 

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow in the Blue/Gold Fall Tournament at Metro Kiwanis Park as they take on Carson Newman College at noon. The Bucs also play Roane State at 2 p.m. and Hiwassee at 6 p.m.
