Bucs falter in double-header losses to Appalachian State
Bucs falter in double-header losses to Appalachian State
Tuesday, April 8, 2014

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 8, 2014) - A lively home crowd was not enough to propel the ETSU softball team to victory Tuesday evening, as the Buccaneers dropped a pair of non-conference games to Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers (15-22) outhit ETSU, 26-9, on the day, winning Game One, 9-2, before taking Game Two, 10-1.

In front of a season-best home crowd of 164, freshman Taylor Carter (Brazil, Ind.) got the Buccaneers (15-23) off to a solid start in the day's opening game, retiring Appalachian State's first three batters in order on just eight pitchesall strikes.

Carter then belted her sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to center field, to carry the Bucs into the third inning knotted in a 1-1 tie with the Mountaineers.

However, that 1-1 deadlock would be as close as ETSU would get to Appalachian State for the remainder of the day.

The Mountaineers went on to outhit the Bucs, 12-3, over the next five innings to seal the 9-2 victory.

With ETSU trailing, 5-2, a four-run Appalachian State seventh inning put the game out of reach for the Bucs.

Carter picked up the decision for ETSU, pitching six and one-third innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out two batters and uncharacteristically walking two others. The Brazil, Ind., native entered Tuesday's game ranking second in the nation for fewest walks per seven innings (0.48), and had not walked multiple batters in a game all season.

Four different ETSU players recorded hits in the game, with junior Alex Everett (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) being the lone Buccaneer to record a multi-hit game, her third such game of the season.

Everett batted 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring ETSU's second and final run of the game in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Kelsey Chernak (Ooltewah, Tenn.).

Appalachian State's 15 hits in Game One is the most hits the Mountaineers have recorded in a single game so far this season.

The Mountaineers' continued to be locked in at the plate during Game Two of Tuesday's double-header, as they outhit the Bucs, 11-4, en route to a 10-1, five-inning win.

Six of Appalachian State's 11 hits came in the fifth inning when, while clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Mountaineers opened the flood gates, pouring on eight runs on six hits to cement the victory.

Senior Katie Wolff (La Grange, Texas) was handed the loss (3-9), allowing nine earned runs over five innings.

At the plate, Wolff went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the third inning that plated Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.).

The -17 hit differencial is ETSU's worst such mark in double-header action this year.

ETSU, which has lost eight of its last nine contests, will look to snap a five-game loss streak this weekend as it hosts North Florida Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m.

This weekend's series versus UNF will serve as the midway point of a seven-game homestand for ETSU. The Bucs will conclude the homestand Wednesday, April 19 with a double-header against future Southern Conference opponent Furman.
