GETTING UP TO SPEED

The Buccaneers (10-12) are looking to put an end to their three-game losing streak following a pair of setbacks to perennial regional power USC Upstate.

ETSU took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning versus the Spartans (19-2) in the second game of the Tuesday doubleheader before USC Upstate rallied to earn a narrow, 4-3 victory.

Freshman Kelsey Smith (Tucson, Ariz.) leads the Southern Conference in home runs per game (0.40), RBI per game (1.25) and slugging percentage (0.800). The Tucson, Ariz., native is also tied with Mercer's Caroline Taylor for the conference lead in home runs with eight.

Impressively, ETSU is 26-for-26 on stolen base attempts this season, and one of just three teams to have at least 26 steals without being caught stealing (Arizona: 35, Tennessee: 29). Junior Jenine Duncan (Jonesborough, Tenn.) leads the Bucs with 12 steals, while Fox has swiped nine bases.  Duncan and Fox rank first and fourth, respectively, in the SoCon for steals per game.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Carter (Brazil, Ind.) leads the Southern Conference in fewest walks allowed per seven innings (1.02). She ranks 16th in the nation in the category.

OPPONENT AT A GLANCE

The Catamounts (9-17) snapped their eight-game losing streak Wednesday, March 18 by sweeping non-conference opponent North Carolina A&T in Cullowhee.

Senior righthander Jordan Garrett has started 18 of the Catamounts' 26 games, posting a 6-8 record. Her ERA mark of 2.36 is second best in the SoCon, while her strikeout per seven innings rate (7.4) also ranks second in the league.

The weekend series will mark the first conference action for both ETSU and Western Carolina.
