JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 28, 2015) - ETSU's offensive attack was held in check Sunday by Chattanooga righthander Taylor Deason, the SoCon's leader in earned runs average. Deason allowed just two hits en route to helping Chattanooga to an 11-0 win in six innings at Betty Basler Field in Johnson City.
The Mocs (21-8, 4-0 SoCon) manufactured 11 runs on 11 hits to take Game One of the weekend's three-game series between ETSU and Chattanooga.
Three home runs accounted for six of the Mocs' 11 runs.
Leading 2-0 in the top of the third, Chattanooga's Nicole Osterman drove a solo homer to left field to extend the Mocs' lead to 3-0.
ETSU's first hit came in the fourth inning. With two outs, Cassi Pickett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) drew a walk before being moved into scoring position by an Alex Everett (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) single up the middle. Brooke Baxter (Jasper, Tenn.) then pinch ran for Pickett; however, Baxter was stranded at second to end the frame.
Junior outfielder Bethany Cowart (Ringgold, Ga.) led off ETSU's fifth inning with a single through the right side and moved to within 60 feet of home plate following two consecutive groundouts; however, Deason forced another groundout to allow the Mocs to escape the inning unscathed.
Chattanooga cemented the win by scoring eight runs in the sixth inning, including a two-run home run by Jesslyn Stockard, and a three-run homer by Osterman, her team-best ninth of the season.
ETSU and Chattanooga will square off Sunday, March 29 for a doubleheader in Johnson City, with games beginning at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m.
