Bucs edged by Chattanooga, 5-4, in series finale
Sunday, March 29, 2015

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 29, 2015) - The ETSU softball team suffered a pair of losses to Southern Conference opponent Chattanooga Sunday, falling, 5-2, in Game One of the day's doubleheader before suffering a narrow, 5-4, loss in the series finale.

In the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Buccaneers (11-18, 1-5 SoCon) jumped out to an early, 3-0 lead following a second-inning, two-RBI single by Emilie Hensley (Morristown, Tenn.) and a fourth-inning solo homer by Kelsey Smith (Tucson, Ariz.).

Smith, who leads ETSU with nine home runs, entered the weekend leading the Southern Conference in home runs per game (0.33) and RBI per game (1.13).

Hensley's bases-clearing single in the second inning plated Cassi Pickett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Brooke Baxter (Jasper, Tenn.). Pickett led off the inning by drawing a walk on five pitches, while Baxter entered the game as a pinch runner for Smith, who followed up Pickett's walk with a single through the left side.

The Mocs (23-8, 6-0) responded to Smith's fourth-inning home run by scoring twice in the fifth inning to cut their deficit to 3-2.

ETSU manufactured one more run in the bottom of the fifth, with Bethany Cowart (Ringgold, Ga.) driving a single up the middle to score Latosha Rectenwald (Morristown, Tenn.) to extend the Bucs' lead to 4-2.

Chattanooga capitalized on a pair of ETSU errors in the top of the sixth inning to score two runs, tying the game at 4-4. The Mocs capped their rally with an Alyssa Taylor RBI sacrifice fly to leftfield in the seventh to score the eventual game-winning run.

Conversely to the series finale, Chattanooga took a 3-0 lead to begin Game One of Sunday's doubleheader thanks to home runs by Jenny Garcia and Nicole Osterman.

ETSU cut into Chattanooga's lead in the fourth inning when Casey Horner (Whitesburg, Tenn.) drove a single down the rightfield line to score a speeding Mykeah Johnson (Cohutta, Ga.) from first base.

Another Chattanooga home run in the fifth inning extended the Mocs' lead to 5-1; however, the Bucs responded by scoring a run in the sixth inning on a double by Smith, making the score 5-2—the eventual final margin.

ETSU will continue its five-game home stand as the Bucs host Radford for a doubleheader Wednesday, April 1, with games beginning at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. ETSU and Radford split a pair of games during the Holiday Inn Invitational earlier this month.
