ETSU's season comes to a close with 5-2 setback to UNCG

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (May 7, 2015) - Seventh-seeded ETSU fell to sixth-seeded UNC Greensboro Thursday, 5-2, at Frost Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn., eliminating the Buccaneers from the Southern Conference Softball Championship and closing the book on their 2015 campaign.

UNCG twin sisters, Lindsay Thomas and Nicole Thomas, terrorized the Bucs (15-33) throughout Thursday's consolation-bracket contest. The Irvine, Calif., natives combined to go 5-for-7 at the plate, driving in five runs.

For a second consecutive day, ETSU senior righthander Whitney Leon (Dandridge, Tenn.) turned in a quality outing in the pitcher's circle, holding the Spartans (25-21) and their nationally-ranked offense scoreless for the game's first five innings. UNCG entered the SoCon tournament ranking 31st in the nation for batting average (.323) and 48th for scoring offense (5.91), with both marks ranking first in the conference.

Wednesday, Leon tossed six innings of three-run softball in the Bucs' narrow, 3-1 setback to second-seeded Samford.

However, the Spartans got on the board in the sixth inning when Lindsay Thomas, a junior, belted a three-run homer to right centerfield, her eighth career Southern Conference Championship home run.

ETSU responded in the bottom of the sixth, with freshman Cassie Pickett (Chattanooga, Tenn.) hitting a two-run home run to left field, trimming the Bucs' deficit to 3-2; however, Nicole Thomas homered in the seventh to extend the Spartan's lead to 5-2.

Nicole Thomas then earned the save by retiring three of the four ETSU batters she faced in the seventh inning, allowing the Spartans to advance in the consolation bracket of the tournament.

Alicia Bazonski earned the win for UNCG, tossing five-and-one-third innings while allowing just two earned runs.

In the setback, freshman Malloree Schurr (Montgomery, Texas) extended her hit streak to a team-best 10 games.
