Bucs conclude play at Georgia Classic

ATHENS, Ga. (Feb. 24, 2018) – The ETSU softball team concluded play at the Georgia Classic on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers dropped a 6-3 decision to Gardner-Webb and a 7-0 decision to No. 14 Georgia from Jack Turner Stadium.

With the setbacks, the Blue and Gold moved to 4-7 on the season, while ETSU returns to action next Friday when the Bucs take on Indiana State at Lipscomb’s Purple/Gold Challenge in Nashville.

After reaching base in both games on Saturday, freshman Lauren Lee (Cleveland, Tenn.) extended her on-base streak to eight straight games, while sophomore Nikki Grupp (Jacksonville, Fla.) saw her 18-game on-base streak come to an end after going 0-for-3 against Georgia.

The Bucs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against Gardner-Webb in their first game of the day, but ETSU’s bats went silent and the Runnin’ Bulldogs rallied for the three-run win. Katie Prebble did all the damage in the comeback win as she belted a solo home run in the fourth, a two-run shot in the sixth and connected on a the three-run, two-out walk-off home run in the seventh.

ETSU scored its first-inning runs when Tiffany Laughren’s (Erwin, Tenn.) sacrifice fly RBI scored Lee, while Taylor Wright’s (Erwin, Tenn.) two-out, two-run run scoring double plated Vanessa Elliott (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Grupp.

Despite being held without a hit for the final six innings, the Bucs had scoring chances in the sixth and seventh innings. Wright worked a two-out walk in the sixth and pinch runner Anissa Avila (Black Mountain, N.C.) stole second before Kylie Toler (Bradenton, Fla.) flew out to right field. Then in the seventh, the Bucs had the go-ahead run on second with one out but ETSU couldn’t break through.

Despite a strong effort by Madison Ogle (Maryville, Tenn.), the Buccaneer right-hander picked up a no-decision. Ogle allowed one run on four hits with seven strikeouts in four innings of work. Laughren suffered the loss (0-1) as she allowed three runs on five hits in two innings of relief. Sophomore Marissa Honeycutt (Kingsport, Tenn.) surrendered the walk-off home run in the seventh.

Madi Lewis pitched one scoreless inning in relief to earn the win (1-0), while Sam Harrell issued three runs on two hits with four walks in six innings.

Prebble paced Gardner-Webb with the three hits and six RBI in the win.

Gardner-Webb improved to 10-7 on the season.

Brittany Gray tossed a one-hit complete game shutout with 14 strikeouts, while Jessica Morgan belted a two-run, two-out home run in the bottom of the fourth to lead No. 14 Georgia to a 7-0 win over ETSU on Saturday.

Despite allowing a leadoff single to Lauren Lee in the fourth inning, Gray faced the minimum as the Buccaneer freshman was caught stealing for the first time this season. As a team, ETSU was a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen bases prior to Lee being thrown out.

Madison Ogle got the start and suffered a tough loss (3-3) after allowing two unearned runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work. Sophomore Kelly Schmidt (Norcross, Ga.) pitched the final 2.1 innings and surrendered five runs (four earned) on seven hits.

Gray – who has not allowed an earned run in 36 straight innings to start the season – posted her third shutout of the season and improved to 6-0.

The Bulldogs plated two more runs in the fifth and pushed across three more in the sixth en route to improving to 13-1 on the season.

Georgia capitalized on a two-out throwing error by third baseman Nikki Grupp in the fourth as Mogran took the first pitch following the miscue over the right field wall for her two-run home run, putting the Bulldogs up, 2-0.

Alyssa DiCarlo plated a run in the fifth when she reached on a bunt single, while Justice Milz – who reached on the second error by Grupp – came around to score on a double play. An inning later, Kaylie Harding and Jordan Doggett both had RBI singles, while Doggett scored the final run when Cortni Emanuel was thrown out trying to steal second.
