NASHVILLE, Tenn. (March 4, 2018) – With a chance to secure a season sweep over Georgia Southern, the ETSU softball team suffered a 6-1 setback to the Eagles in its final game of the Purple/Gold Challenge from Lipscomb’s Draper Diamond on Sunday afternoon.
The Bucs – who defeated Georgia Southern 7-5 earlier this season in Statesboro – scored their only run on a sixth-inning home run by junior Tiffany Laughren (Erwin, Tenn.). To go with her team-leading fourth homer of the season, Laughren reached base twice as she also reached via a one-out walk in the first inning that led to the bases being loaded; however, the Blue and Gold were held scoreless in that f rame. Freshman Julia Fritz (Glen Allen, Va.) also reached twice as she walked and delivered a one-out single in the seventh.
Georgia Southern struck early as Alesha Mann led off the game with a home run to left-center, while the Eagles plated the eventual game-winning run on Shelby Wilson’s double in the third. Georgia Southern broke the game open with a pair of two-run doubles in the sixth to go ahead, 6-0.
Sophomore Marissa Honeycutt (Kingsport, Tenn.) got the start for the Blue and Gold, and suffered the loss (0-2) after allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Laughren – who tossed 4.2 scoreless innings to get the win against Indiana State on Saturday night – came out of the bullpen and allowed two runs on three hits in one inning. Sophomore Kelly Schmidt (Norcross, Ga.) pitched a perfect inning in the seventh with one strikeout.
Kierra Camp tossed five scoreless innings of two-hit ball with two walks (no strikeouts) to earn the win (8-3), while Kaylee Ramos tossed the final two innings of one-run ball.
Mann reached base three times as she also walked and singled to go with her home run, while Macy Weeks and Mekhia Freeman provided the pair of two-run scoring doubles in the sixth.
The Bucs had won back-to-back games prior to the setback and moved to 6-9, while Georgia Southern improved to 12-6.
ETSU returns to action next weekend when the Blue and Gold host Jackson State, St. Peter’s and Austin Peay in the 2018 Buccaneer Classic, which begins on Friday. The Bucs take on St. Peter’s Friday at 1:15 p.m. and Jackson State at 3:30 p.m. at Betty Basler Field.
