JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 18, 2019) – Junior right hander, Kelly Schmidt (Norcross, Ga.), was named this week’s Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week for games played from Feb. 11-17. The award was announced this afternoon by the league office and is the first SoCon Pitcher of the Week honor for Schmidt in her collegiate career.
The Bucs posted a 4-1 record this weekend, two wins coming from the hands of Schmidt. The Georgia native kicked off the weekend with a career game against Detroit Mercy, registering a career-high 11 strikeouts in the 1-0 victory. Schmidt went the distance, delivering her second complete-game shutout of the season.
The very next day Schmidt earned yet another complete-game shutout, this time a five-inning performance as ETSU dismantled Charleston Southern by the final score of 12-0. Schmidt held the host Bucs to just two hits, while striking out three batters.
Schmidt capped off the weekend with two innings pitched against Virginia Tech, allowing two runs and striking out three batters. The Norcross, Ga., native finished the week with 17 strikeouts in 14 innings of work and an ERA of 1.00.
Schmidt and the Bucs (6-1-2) will be back in action tomorrow when ETSU welcomes No. 6 Tennessee to Betty Basler Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
