ETSU squandered a four-run lead in the seventh

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (Feb. 24, 2019) – The ETSU Softball Team concluded the GWU Softball Tournament with a heartbreaking loss to Gardner-Webb on Sunday, 5-4. The Bucs were ahead 4-0 with three outs to play but could not find the final two outs as ETSU surrendered five runs in the home half of the seventh. With the loss, ETSU falls to 8-4-2 on the season.

The Bucs struck first in the second inning when Tiffany Laughren (Erwin, Tenn.) crossed the plate following an error by Gardner-Webb. ETSU stranded the bases loaded to conclude the inning, harmlessly grounding out to second.

Nikki Grupp (Jacksonville, Fla.) doubled the ETSU lead in the top half of the third inning with her third long ball in as many days. Grupp’s solo shot was her fifth of the season and also stretched her hitting streak to eight consecutive games.

Two innings later, the Bucs doubled the two run lead to four thanks to Kylie Toler’s (Bradenton, Fla.) two-run single, bringing home Malloree Schurr (Montgomery, Texas) and Grupp.

With things seeming in hand for the Bucs, the seventh inning struck. Entering the frame, ETSU had held Gardner-Webb to just three hits in the first six innings. The Runnin’ Bulldogs slowly clawed into the Bucs’ lead, eventually scoring five runs on five hits to snatch the victory from the clutches of ETSU.
