ETSU to take on Appalachian State on Wednesday

BOONE, N.C. (March 19, 2019) – The ETSU Bucs softball team will turn attention to Appalachian State on Wednesday, March 20 for a midweek, single-game showdown in Boone, N.C. First pitch is slated to begin at 5 p.m. at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.

Battling the Bucs
ETSU is coming off a doubleheader split on Saturday at Tennessee Tech, shutting out the Golden Eagles in game two by the final score of 1-0. The Bucs enter the midweek showdown with a 13-10-2 overall record, including 4-5-1 in true road games. Nikki Grupp (Jacksonville, Fla.) leads the Bucs in hitting with a .359 batting average, belting seven home runs and driving in 29 runs batted in. Malloree Schurr (Montgomery, Texas) is second on the squad in batting average (.313) and RBIs (25). ETSU is led in the circle by Kelly Schmidt (Norcross, Ga.) with a 5-5 overall record and a 3.14 ERA. Schmidt is joined by Taylor Boling (Jasper, Ga.) with a 5-3 record in the circle and a 3.89 ERA.

Meeting the Mountaineers
Appalachian State is 17-7 on the campaign, including 3-1 when playing games in Boone. Appalachian State has won three consecutive games and eight of its last nine showdowns. The Mountaineers have already matched their win total from last season, finishing 17-35 in 2018. Keri White leads the team in hitting with a .365 average and 12 RBIs. The next closest batter is hitting .277 on the season. Jenny Dodd has a team-high three home runs and 18 runs batted in. Kenzie Longanecker leads the team in wins with a perfect 9-0 record. However, the Mountaineers are led in ERA by Sydney Holland with a 1.86 mark and a 6-4 record.

Series History
Wednesday will be the 36th all-time meeting between the two squads as ETSU is 23-12 all-time against Appalachian State. The Bucs defeated the Mountaineers in the last meeting on April 29, 2015 by the final score of 14-13, snapping a four-game slide against Appalachian State.
