ETSU seeded No. 7 in upcoming postseason tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (May 8, 2022) – For the first time since the 2019 season, ETSU will be taking part in the Southern Conference Softball Championship. The COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the 2020 tournament and in 2021, only the top four seeds made the tournament due to COVID restrictions.

The Bucs, seeded No. 7 in the tournament, will square off against No. 2 seeded Samford on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. The tournament will be played Wednesday, May 11 – Saturday, May 14 at UNCG Softball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

ETSU finished the regular season with an 8-46 mark, including 4-14 in league play. The Buccaneers had their chance to sweep Furman in the regular-season finale on Sunday but fell short in extra innings. The last time that ETSU and Samford met in the SoCon Tournament, the Bucs sent the Bulldogs home packing with a 5-2, 8-inning win at Frost Stadium in 2019.

UNCG captured the top seed for the fifth consecutive season and will benefit from the first-round bye. The Spartans were followed by Samford and Chattanooga as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds. Furman (No. 4), Mercer (No. 5) and Western Carolina (No. 6) are positioned ahead of the Bucs in the SoCon standings.

Wednesday’s games will begin at 10 a.m. with the Paladins and the Bears kicking things off, followed by ETSU taking on Samford. Chattanooga and Western Carolina will round out the opening day with a 3 p.m. game. UNCG will take on the winner of Furman and Mercer on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
