ETSU suffers 9-3 loss to Campbell 

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Feb 18, 2023) – The ETSU softball team wrapped up its weekend at the Carolina Classic in Columbia, S.C. on Saturday, as the Buccaneers suffered a 9-3 loss.

For the sixth time this season, ETSU took a lead as the Bucs plated three runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 3-0; however, Campbell – the reigning Big South Conference champions –answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good.

NOTABLES

  • The Bucs combined for a season-high 12 hits.
  • For the first time all season, four different hittersKaylee Higgins (Chatsworth, Ga.), Faith Adams (Henrico, Va.), Jessica Odom (Jefferson City, Tenn.) and Kasidy Dunn (Friendsville, Tenn.) record multiple hits, accounting for eight of the Bucs’ hits.
  • ETSU left a season-high 11 runners on base, leaving a runner stranded in every inning.
  • Dunn finished with two hits (one double) and two RBIs.

The first action of the game happened in the top of the second inning as ETSU recorded three singles, but were unable to push any runs across the plate. With one out and runners on first and second, Dunn singled to center but Riley Nayadley (Ooltewah, Tenn.) was thrown out at home as she tried to score from second on the play.

After leaving two more runners stranded in the third inning, the Bucs finally broke open in the fourth to go ahead, 3-0. Adams led off the frame with a single and Odom advanced her with a single of her own. With a runner in scoring position, Dunn smashed a ball down the left field line to score both runners. Dunn, who advanced to third on the double, later scored on an error by Campbell’s first baseman.

In the bottom half of the inning, Campbell exploded for six runs on seven hits to take a 6-3 lead. After three singles, the Fighting Camels scored their first run via off a sacrifice fly and scored again on the next at-bat with an RBI single. Campbell took the lead for good on a two-run scoring single up the middle by Lindsey Hunt, while Claudia Ware and Tyra Parker wrapped up the scoring plays with a double to right-center and a single down the left field line.

The Fighting Camels tacked on a solo run in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to secure the six-run victory.

The Bucs will see their first midweek action as they travel to Radford for a doubleheader Tuesday, Feb. 21 with first pitch of game one scheduled for 2 p.m.
