Bucs take on the Bulldogs at 12:30 p.m. in game one

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (May 9, 2023) – For the second straight year, the ETSU softball team will face the No. 2 seed Samford in game one of the Southern Conference Championship, hosted at Frost Stadium, in Chattanooga, Tenn.

With first pitch scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, the No. 7 seed Buccaneers will play Thursday with time and opponent TBD depending on tomorrow’s results.

ABOUT ETSU

• As the No. 7 seed, the Bucs enter the championship with a 15-35 overall mark, finishing with a 6-12 record in conference play.
• The last time out, ETSU shutout Mercer, 2-0, to capture the series win this past Sunday at Betty Basler Field, after splitting the doubleheader Saturday.
• Earning a spot on the all-conference second team, Brianna Bailey (Wewahitchka, Fla.) ended the regular season with 3.83 ERA, striking out 126 batters while posting four shutouts for the Blue & Gold.
• The second Buc on the all-conference second team, Sara Muir (Sequatchie, Tenn.) is leading the team with a .345 batting average, 29 RBI and 10 homers.
• Making her second all-conference second team, Cameron Young (Knoxville, Tenn.) leads the team with 55 hits and 17 doubles, while hitting a .340 in 50 starts for ETSU.

ABOUT SAMFORD

• As the No. 2 seed, Samford enters the championship with a 23-29 overall record, finishing with a 12-6 mark in SoCon play.
• The last time out, Samford swept Chattanooga in the three-game series to end the regular season over the weekend.
• Logan Champion leads the Bulldogs with 57 hits, producing 26 RBI and hitting 10 home runs with a .329 batting average.
• In the circle, McKenzie Newcomb owns a 2.18 with 170.1 innings pitched. Posting 12 wins, Newcomb recorded 153 strikeouts in the regular season.

SERIES HISTORY

• For the second straight year, ETSU will take on Samford in the first game of the tournament after meeting Samford in the 2022 conference tournament.
• In the regular season, ETSU lost the series but took game three 7-3 on April 7.
• Wednesday will be the 28th meeting all-time and the Bucs are 7-20 in the all-time series against the Bulldogs.
