Volleyball Defeats UNC Greensboro in Four Games
Johnson City, Tenn.-- East Tennessee State freshman Rachel Shifflet and senior Courtney Sussillo each pounded 15 kills en route to a 3-1 victory over UNC Greensboro Friday night in Brooks Gym.
The Bucs started with a frenzy in the first game by racing to a 9-2 lead. The Spartans battled back but could not draw even with the Bucs as they took the first game 15-7. The second game proved to be more competitive as UNC Greensboro bolted ahead and led 14-7. With game point on the line for UNCG, the Bucs responded by drawing even at 14-14. The rally was not to be as the Spartans put the game away 16-14 and tied the match at one game each.
ETSU then responded by jumping out to an early 9-2 lead and never trailed as they took the third game 15-10. ETSU then cruised to a 15-4 win in the final stanza to take the match.
Carey Cavanaugh dished out 46 assists on the night as five Bucs tallied double-digit kills on the night. Freshman Lissa Allen also had a productive night by notching 14 kills. Sussillo finished the match with posting an impressive .600 hitting percentage. Amber Ciskowski also helped the Buccaneer cause by putting away 12 kills as teammate Jena Policastro downed 10.
UNC Greensboro was led by Becky Moore who finished with 19 kills on the night. With the win, the Bucs improve to 16-11 overall, 12-7 in the Southern Conference while UNCG fell to 9-21 overall, 6-13 in league play.
The Bucs will close out their home schedule Saturday, Nov.11 as they host Furman. Match time is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Brooks Gym.
