BOONE, N.C. -- Juniors Karen Nielson (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and Claire Reynolds (Irmo, S.C.) recorded 17 kills each to lead Appalachian State to a 3-1 victory over East Tennessee State in Southern Conference volleyball action. The victory increased Appalachian's string of league wins to seven straight and put ASU one game ahead of E.T.S.U. in the SoCon standings.

The Mountaineers took a 10-4 lead in the first game and looked to set the tone, but the Buccaneers battled back to score nine of the next 11 points to take a 13-12 advantage before falling 15-13 in Game One. Not to be denied, the Bucs rallied in the second game and cruised to a 15-5 win to knot the score at 1-1. In Game Three, the Apps took an early 5-1 lead and won 15-4. The fourth and final game of the night witnessed both teams muster runs. The Buccaneers led 13-12, but the Apps came back again, to win 15-13 to claim the match.

SoCon Player of the Week, setter Tiffany White (Hendersonville, N.C.) gave another solid all-around performance on her way to totaling 56 assists, nine kills and seven digs. Nielson tallied 17 kills, 12 digs and a pair of solo blocks. Reynolds notched a .483 attack percentage to lead all players.

East Tennessee was led by junior standout Amber Ciskowski's 16 kills. Junior setter Carey Cavanaugh came within three kills of a triple-double with 37 assists, a match-high 20 digs and seven kills. Outside hitter Jena Poliscastro contributed 17 kills, six kills and six assists in the losing cause

Appalachian State improves to 15-14 and carries an overall winning percentage above .500 for the first time all season. ASU is now 12-6 in SoCon play. East Tennessee State moves to 15-11 overall and is in sixth in the league standings with a SoCon record of 11-7.

The Buccaneers wind up the regular season with two games at home this weekend against UNCG, Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Davidson, Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
