Johnson City, Tenn.-- East Tennessee State senior middle hitter Jena Policastro paced the Bucs with 13 kills against just two errors as the Buccaneers defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles 3-1 in volleyball action Saturday afternoon from Brooks Gym.
Junior Amber Ciskowski and freshmen Lissa Allen and Rachel Shifflet also registered double-digit kills with 10 each for ETSU. Freshman setter Jessica Miller led the Bucs with 22 assists and tied Shifflet for the team lead with seven digs. Senior Kellie Wallace had a strong game with seven kills and a Buccaneer season-high five solo blocks.
Georgia Southern (11-12, 5-9) jumped out to a 3-0 lead to begin the first game and never looked back, taking the game 15-5. The Buccaneers (12-7, 8-4) responded by winning game two 15-6 after taking an early 6-1 lead. The third game was a back-and-forth affair that Georgia Southern led 13-7, but ETSU fought back and prevailed 18-16. The Bucs continued their momentum coming off the emotional third game and took the fourth game convincingly, 15-2.
Georgia Southern was led by junior setter Amanda Brooks, who tallied 35 assists and reached the 3,000 career assist milestone in the third game. Freshman Megan Lippi had a game-high 13 digs for the Eagles.
The Buccaneers return to the hardwood on Friday, Oct. 27 at Wofford as they begin a three-game road trip that will also take them to Furman and Virginia Tech.
