Johnson City, Tenn. -- The East Tennessee State volleyball team ran their winning streak to five as they defeated College of Charleston in a thrilling 3-1 match Friday night from Brooks Gym in Johnson City, Tenn. The first game would start out even, with the teams exchanging points until ETSU (8-1, 5-1 SoCon) would take a 16-10 lead. The Bucs would hold that advantage until College of Charleston (10-2, 2-1 SoCon) would cut the advantage to two at 27-25. The Cougars would eventually take the lead and have game point at 30-29, but the Bucs would fight back to take the lead back and win the game 33-31. College of Charleston turned the momentum around by winning the second game 30-22. The Cougars took a small early lead and expanded it throughout the game, with the final margin being the game-high. The third game was the reverse of the second. The Bucs took a small advantage in the third game and it grew as the game went on. The game-high lead was the final margin, 30-19 in favor of ETSU. The Cougars took an early lead in the fourth game, but the Bucs tied the gae at 9-9 and would take the lead at 10-9. ETSU would not look back, never relinquishing the lead and winning the final game, 30-21. The Bucs were led by senior setter Carey Cavanaugh, who was one dig short of a triple-double, tallying 10 kills, 51 assists and nine digs. Sophomore outside hitter Kate Steidle led the Bucs with 16 kills as ETSU had five players finish the match with double-digit kills. Sophomore setter Jessica Miller had a game-high 16 digs. College of Charleston was ked by outside hitter Sara Davis who had 14 kills, 12 digs and three blocks. Outside hitter Stephanie Ballard led the Cougars with 15 kills and setter Mary Sabatino led the team with 36 assists. Middle blocker Alisa Long had a game-high four blocks for the Cougars. The Bucs return to action on Saturday as they host The Citadel at 11 a.m. and then Lipscomb University at 3 p.m. from Brooks Gym in Johnson City.
